Women's Volleyball Signs Top Local Recruit

Picture

Signing a recruit is always an exciting time for any coach, and when that recruit is right in your backyard, it’s even better.

For the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team and head coach Marc LaRochelle that’s exactly the case, as he has brought in Cassie Dobson, a local player who has played for Widdifield Secondary School for the past four years.

The 5-foot-9 left side is the first recruit LaRochelle has landed so far this season as he looks to add to his roster for the 2014-15 season. He said bringing Dobson in is an important move for his team and the program. “I am very pleased that Cassie chose Nipissing University and the Lakers Volleyball Program,” LaRochelle said. “It’s great to welcome a North Bay native to the team, who has developed in the North Bay Youth Volleyball Club Lakers system. That’s a testament to all the coaches that have developed and enhanced her talents throughout the years.”

Dobson participates in club volleyball, playing for the NBYVC Lakers where she has brought home a silver medal as part of the Tier 2 U-14 team, a silver medal as part of the Tier 2 U-18 team and was club MVP with the U-18 in 2012-13. Dobson has also had a successful high school career collecting a number of medals – gold, silver and bronze – during her tenure as a Wildcat, as well as some personal accomplishments. At the Georgian College Invitational Tournament, Dobson helped her team to a championship and took home tournament MVP honours.

Dobson said she’s looking forward to joining the Lakers next season and can’t wait to get going. “I’m excited. It has been my dream to play for the Nipissing Lakers since I started playing volleyball in Grade 7 and I’m thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to play in my hometown,” she said. “I have always wanted to attend Nipissing because it’s close to home and offers the program I am interested in. I plan to study criminal justice in the policing stream and I have heard positive feedback about the program.”

Dobson also played basketball and soccer in high school, earning a number of medals in basketball throughout her career.

LaRochelle said she’ll bring a variety of skills to the team, and he’s looking forward to seeing her in the lineup. “Cassie will bring some much needed production to our offence. She has multiple tools as an attacker, is an effective passer and she’s a very good defender,” he said.

Dobson said the decision to come to Nipissing was a pretty simple one. To be able to take the program she wants – Criminal Justice – as well as play volleyball in her hometown is a dream come true. “I can bring leadership, hardwork and support to the team on and off the court,” Dobson noted.

LaRochelle has been busy travelling around the province looking to bolster his roster for next season and add some pieces to the puzzle. Signing Dobson is a big step in the right direction and what LaRochelle hopes is one of many skilled players he brings to the program in the future.
