What is club volleyball? Club volleyball consists of regionally organized and governed training programs for players interested in obtaining advanced level training and competition in the sport of volleyball. Players train locally and compete against other club programs at OVA sanctioned tournaments. The NBYVC works to promote the sport of volleyball and to teach the skills needed for a lifetime of play. Visit the OVA website for more information about beach and indoor club volleyball.
Who are we? Established in 2005, the NBYVC is a non-profit, volunteer run club who is a member of the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA). The use of the Lakers name and logo reinforces our relationship with Nipissing University Athletics. Our teams compete in at least four, one day tournaments throughout the season. The season finishes with a 2 or 3 day Provincial Championship tournament.
What is the role of the Board of Directors? The Board is the highest level of decision-making for the NBYVC. It is accountable for, and has authority over, the organization's resources and activities. The Executive defines how the club will carry out its work.
Where do Laker's teams play? We are located in Region 2 of the OVA map. While teams may compete in Northern Ontario the majority of tournaments are hosted in Southern Ontario. Locations are determined as they become available on the OVA website. Teams will play in approximately 4 tournaments plus Provincial Championships in April. Upcoming tournaments can be found here.
How do I get my child involved? All players must tryout for their respective team. Tryouts are held in September and the dates and times are posted on this website. Tryouts can be held in 1 or multiple sessions and attending all tryouts will allow an athlete to show their skills and enhances their opportunity for a proper assessment. Players are chosen at tryouts based on a variety of attributes including athletic ability and attitude. Once teams have been selected, each player is registered with the OVA under the NBYVC using the National Registration System (NRS).
The clubs ability to form a team is based on the availability of coaches and the number of athletes that are available to form a team. A minimum of 8 players are required to qualify to attend OVA tournaments.
My player made the team, now what?
How much does it cost to join? Fees for each volleyball season is approximately $1900-$2300 +/- per season. The number of tournaments and number of players on a team will most affect the per athlete cost. These costs may be reduced by fundraising (bingo and/or sponsorship). The actual amount will be announced at the first parent’s meeting. Payments can be made in three installments during the season. Dues pay for tournament entry fees, uniforms, equipment, coaches expenses and team supplies. Families are responsible for the cost of travelling and attending tournaments.
Typically, the uniform and equipment provided by the club includes spandex/shorts, game jersey, warm-up jacket, warm-up shirt, and team bag. Additional items players may require and have to purchase include: knee pads, socks, court shoes and ankle braces if required.
Are there opportunities for assistance in paying for team fees? Yes there are. Locally there two programs that, with a successful application, provide confidential financial support for your child. You can access applications for these programs by by clicking on the KidSport and/or Jump Start logos below.

- Usually between 10–12 players are selected for each team.
- Dates for practices and tournaments are announced early after tryouts.
- Board of Directors will host the annual Lakers Welcome Day; a high-energy fun event that includes the Nipissing University varsity volleyball athletes, snacks, games and a parent information session. At this meeting, you will receive OVA registration forms, the budget/cost summary, information about volunteer requirements and other logistics
- Teams will also hold individual team meetings to meet the coaches and get more details specific to your child's team.
- You may be needed to organize uniform sizing, score keep, line at games, organize food for the athletes, book hotels or work a bingo night. The club will support each team in the organization of the required volunteers as the fall portion of the season starts.

When are practices? Depending on the age of the athletes teams will practice two or three times per week. One practice is usually held Sundays between the hours of 10:00 am and 6:00 pm at Nipissing University gym and the remaining practices will be weeknights at a local North Bay school.
How long is the season? Teams are chosen in September and compete November to mid-April.
Do all the players play equally? The OVA requires that at the ages of 15U and younger, teams must abide by the Fair Play Policy. For ages 16U and older, the amount of playing time is at the coach’s discretion and will not be equal for all players. This is an important topic that is discussed by the coach at the individual team meetings at the start of the season. Players will get the same opportunities to develop skills in practice.
